ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA

Attending a concert by the Chiquinha Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra is a unique experience that brings together respect for diversity, great talent, and a lot of fun!

With the important mission of collaborating on gender equity actions, we are the first orchestra exclusively made up of girls and women from the public education system.

Since 2021, as a result of a consistent educational and artistic process, we have taken to the stages of Brazil and the world, spreading the power of our instrumentalists and the strength of female protagonism in music.

With the great visibility of our concerts, original musicals, festivals, training programs, and professional development, we contribute to building a society that is increasingly just and diverse for this and future generations.

Priscila Bomfim, our artistic director

With great competence and charisma, our artistic director and principal conductor, Priscila Bomfim, is the leading figure of the Chiquinha Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Portugal, she has been mentored by renowned conductors such as Leonid Grin (Chile), Alexander Polianychko (Russia), Neeme Järvi (Estonia), and Isaac Karabtchevsky (Brazil), and today she is a maestro at the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro.

As a guest conductor, she has led major orchestras, including the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB), the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (RS), and the Opera and Orchestra Academy of Theatro São Pedro (SP), among others.

In her award-winning career as a conductor and pianist, Priscila elevates the role of women in concert music, serving as a great source of inspiration for our "Chiquinhas"!

Why an all-female orchestra?

Gender inequality affects the entire social structure, especially among the most vulnerable segments of the population.

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 ("Gender Equality"), we work to break the cycle of gender inequality in concert music by encouraging the participation of female instrumentalists across various sections and in leadership roles.

These activities have a direct impact on the music production chain as well as on the lives of students, families, and communities
